Testing the limits of mobile-empowered shopping etiquette
Without a doubt sales this Christmas are down for retailers. But what makes it even tougher for shopkeepers is the growing trend of mobile-empowered price comparison.
With purse strings being tightened worldwide, consumers are desperate to find the best price. But time is still the most precious commodity of all. No one wants to waste time fighting the shopping crowds all over town just to find the best price.
The solution is pure mobile revolution. While standing in the middle of a store, shoppers pull out their mobile phones and search for the same product that is staring them in the face. When they can find a better price, they buy online.
This takes the concept of window shopping to new heights. Will retailers be forced to ban the use of mobile phones inside stores?
I’ve spoken off the record with a few Christmas shoppers I’ve caught doing this. They all felt a bit naughty, but none of them felt they were in anyway crossing the line. After all, it’s not like they were stealing! And it seems, that at least in the eyes (and ears) of other shoppers, this is one of the least offensive mobile activities this holiday season.
Last minute Christmas shopping seems to bring out the worst in us all. So to restore a little peace on earth and goodwill to men, let’s consider a bit of mobile etiquette [via Dialaphone's 25 Mobile Do's and Don'ts for the Holidays]
- Do hang up your cell phone as you approach the front of your shopping lines. Everyone has been waiting long enough for the line to move and they don’t want to wait any longer as you linger in goodbyes at the cash register. Plus the people working at that cash register don’t want to listen to your conversation. They probably don’t even want to be there.
- Don’t forget to use your indoor voice when you’re on the phone in public. People tend to talk too loudly on their cell phones in public. During this time when there are too many crowds at every place that you need to go, this can get really annoying really quickly.
- Don’t underestimate the relaxing power of holiday-themed cell phone games. Download a game or two to play while waiting in long lines or taking public transportation.
So, if you are on of those who are still running around today finishing up your shopping, keep in mind that your mobile is a powerful tool — just remember to use it responsibly. Santa is watching.
