Will the iPhone Take Geotagging Mainstream?
Geotagging your pictures (which means adding GPS co-ordinate data to an image whenever you snap a pic with your phone) allows you to add them to all sorts of mapping applications like Yahoo! Maps or Google Earth. However, for many of us with GPS-enabled camera phones, it’s simply to much of a technological challenge to make it all work.
For example if you own an HTC Tytn II, this is what you have to do to enable your GPS-camera:
Open any registry editor, then go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\HTC\Camera\ and in the folder P9 change “enabled” from 0 to 1. Now new option GPS Photo will appear in the menu.
Most people would have been lost at the word “registry editor”. Why should such a cool feature be so horribly hidden?
Well, if rumors surrounding the next generation iPhone are true, then expect “location services” to include GPS-based Google mapping, along with geotagging. If the images above are real, then it looks to make ths feature a lot easier than it is for most users.
